Former Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Shinzo Abe shot dead during a campaign trail in Nara on Friday

Though Japan has the strictest gun control laws in the world, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe assassinated by the gun attack on Friday while he was addressing an election speech in Nara. Abe, 67, was taken to the hospital after being hit by two bullets from behind – one in chest & one in the neck, but he was declared dead before treatment begins. Tetsuya Yamagami (41) former maritime self-defense force member was immediately arrested on spot by security officials. Japan is in shock as it is known in the world as the most peaceful nation with some of the strictest gun control laws.

Shinzo Abe, described as a right-wing nationalist leader, served Japan as Prime Minister from 2006 – 2007 and from 2012 – 2020. Due to ill health, he resigned in 2020 as PM of Japan. Abe helped strengthen India-Japan ties on various issues like bullet trains, quality infrastructure, maritime security, Indo-Pacific strategy, and many more.
