The tragic Banastarim bridge incident that resulted in the loss of three lives prompted discussions in the Goa legislative assembly, with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant explaining the complexities of preventing such accidents. Sawant stressed that while it’s essential to ensure road safety, stopping every vehicle for checks is impractical, as it would lead to complaints from the public.

During Zero Hour, opposition leader Yuri Alemao criticized the state of law and order, asserting that the recent accident showcased a collapse in this aspect. Chief Minister Sawant refuted the claim, maintaining that the accident wasn’t a direct failure of law and order. He acknowledged the role of enforcement agencies in road safety and expressed concern for the innocent families affected by accidents.

Sawant emphasized the importance of responsible driving, urging both Goan residents and tourists to adhere to traffic regulations. He underlined that everyone’s lives, including those of other road users, are equally valuable. He clarified the state’s stance on drunk driving, affirming that it is not tolerated anywhere in Goa. Sawant acknowledged that instances of reckless driving could occur after alcohol consumption at events or parties.

Addressing the specific accident, Sawant conveyed that rules are being enforced consistently and would continue to be in the future. The accident on Sunday night not only claimed three lives but also left six individuals injured. Authorities arrested Paresh Sawardekar, 48, in connection with the accident. He is alleged to have driven a Mercedes-Benz SUV in the wrong lane on the Banastarim bridge while under the influence of alcohol.
