Despite producing 672MLD (Million Liters per Day) of treated water daily, Goa faces a shortage of 80 to 100MLD due to leakages from aging pipelines, resulting in a non-revenue water (NRW) rate of over 30%. However, a positive change is on the horizon, as Goa plans to become self-sufficient in its water needs by 2024. Santosh Mhapne, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), made this announcement on Saturday, revealing that various treatment plants with a combined capacity of 300MLD are slated for commissioning. While South Goa already meets its water requirements with self-sufficient treated water, the challenge persists in North Goa. To address this issue, the replacement of old pipelines is being undertaken in phases. Mhapne stated, “Infrastructure works for a total of 300MLD treatment plants are underway, and by 2024, Goa will attain self-sufficiency.” He shared this optimistic outlook during a seminar organized by the Indian Water Works Association Goa Centre at Dona Paula.
