RESCUE OF SICK CREW OFF GOA BY INDIAN COAST GUARD

The Indian Coast Guard rescued a medically ill crew from ship.

On 14 September 21 a message was received from MRCC Mumbai informing the operations division at local Coast Guard Headquarters (Goa) that 01 crew of MT Fairchem Katana, operating 250 NM West of Goa required emergent medical attention. The crew namely Shri Amit Kumar Singh, aged 31 years was suffering with Diabetic Ketoacidosis and the ship relayed the distress message to alert Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (Mumbai) on 14 September 21.

The operations team on analysing the location assisted the patient on call using available medical expertise and directed the vessel to start closing towards Goa. The vessel was later identified on the Radar plot through the Remote operating station operator as it closed to the coast on 15 September 2021. Meanwhile the local agent and port control were informed and liaised for coordinating the medical evacuation of the ailing seaman. The ship arrived Mormugao inner anchorage at about 0300 hrs on 15 Sep 21, however due to high swell the ailing crew didn’t rescued. Later on the ship entered Mormugao Harbour and the crew was disembarked onboard MPT Tug Ocean Spirit and further shifted to MPT Berth No. 10. The Medical Team of Indian Coast Guard, Goa assessed the medical status, provided first aid and with the help of agent shifted the crew to SMRC civil hospital, Chicalim.

The successful execution of medical evacuation resulting in saving of precious human life, again reiterates the faith of sea farers community in the Indian Coast Guard, which always lives up to its motto “Vayam Rakshamah”.
